ScenePal — Privacy Policy

ScenePal (the “app”) is a practice tool that listens to you read scripted lines and reads other characters aloud so you can rehearse alone. This policy explains what data the app handles, where it goes, and the choices you have.

Data the app handles

Scripts you provide

• Scripts you paste, upload as PDFs or documents, or capture as screenshots are stored locally on your device using the browser or OS storage APIs.
• PDFs are parsed on-device by PDF.js; screenshots are processed on-device by Tesseract.js. The app does not send the original files or extracted text to our servers for storage.

Optional AI cleanup

• If you tap “AI Cleanup” on the review screen, the roughly-extracted script text for that scene is sent to a hosted endpoint operated by the app, which uses Google’s Gemini models (the Google Generative Language API / Vertex AI) to return a cleaned, dialogue-only version.
• Only the script text you are cleaning is sent — no name, account, or device identifier is attached. The text is processed to generate the response and is not stored by the app; it is subject to Google’s privacy policy.
• This step is entirely optional. The manual review/edit step works without it.

Microphone audio and speech recognition

• When you start a practice session, the app asks for microphone permission and captures your voice only while you are actively practicing.
• On iOS and Android, speech recognition is performed by the operating system’s built-in recognizer. Apple and Google may transmit audio or transcripts to their own services in accordance with their respective privacy policies; the app itself does not store or transmit the audio.
• In the web version, speech recognition uses your browser’s Web Speech API, which in most browsers (including Chrome and Safari) sends audio to the browser vendor’s speech service for transcription.
• Transcripts are used only to compare against the expected script line and to compute an accuracy score. The transcript is kept locally on your device for session progress and is not shared with us.

Text-to-speech (other characters’ lines)

• By default the app uses free, on-device voices from your platform.
• If you enable Google Cloud Neural voices, the text of the line being spoken is sent to a hosted endpoint operated by the app to synthesize speech. Only the line text and voice ID are sent; no personal identifiers are attached.
• If you enter an ElevenLabs API key in Settings, the text of the line is sent directly from your device to ElevenLabs using your own key, subject to ElevenLabs’ privacy policy. The API key is stored locally on your device and is never sent to us.

Camera preview (optional)

• If you enable the camera preview feature, the video stream is shown on your device only and is never transmitted or recorded.

Progress and settings

• Practice progress, session history, learned homophone corrections, and app settings are stored locally on your device. You can clear them at any time by removing the app’s data or uninstalling.

Data we collect

The app does not require an account and does not collect personal information, analytics, or advertising identifiers. We do not sell or share any user data.

Third-party services

• Apple Speech Recognition (iOS native)
• Android SpeechRecognizer / Google Speech Services (Android native)
• Web Speech API (web version only; provided by your browser)
• Google Cloud Text-to-Speech (optional, via the app’s hosted endpoint)
• Google Gemini / Generative Language API (optional AI cleanup, via the app’s hosted endpoint)
• ElevenLabs API (optional; only when you provide your own key)

Each of these services has its own privacy practices. Please review their policies directly for details.

Children’s privacy

The app is appropriate for general audiences, including students who use it for school theatre work, but it is not directed at children under 13 and does not knowingly collect personal information from them.

Your choices

• Revoke microphone, speech recognition, camera, or photo permissions at any time from your device settings.
• Clear stored scripts, progress, and API keys from the app’s Settings screen or by uninstalling the app.
